We could have left it with that. But, knowledge is an advantage. So if you want to make the most of your play (meaning: win more money) and you are new to online slot games, you should take the time to read and better understand the game. Not that it’s complicated, but still, read something for once in your life!
Online Slots: The Basics
You probably know the Classic Slot Machine. Three reels that spin, and in order to win you need to get three identical symbols lined in the middle. Online Slots, or Video Slots, are more than that. First of all, most of them have five reels. Second thing to understand is that the Win isn’t necessarily in the middle row. It can be the top or bottom row, it can be diagonal or in zigzag. And they change from one Slot to another. Welcome to the Online World where everything is possible. How would you know you won if there are so many Winning options that change from Slot to Slot?
Worry not - you will be let known of your every Win. It’s a software, you see, it knows.
What Are Pay Lines
As we said, in Online Slots there are many different possible winning lines.
Usually, there are between 9 to 30 different winning lines in each Slot.
They are called Pay Lines. They look something like this:
In this game above there are 25 different Pay Lines. Meaning, with every spin you have twenty-five possibilities to Win. As you can see, some Pay Lines run straight, some diagonal while others go zigzag.
What’s important is, if you get any of these 25 Pay Lines you Win.
Another important thing to understand is: You can have the winning streak anywhere along the Pay Line.
The matching symbols don’t need to be next to each other, or in any specific place along the Pay Line.
Now your question probably is: if I bet on more lines do I increase my chances of winning?
There is no definitive answer here. Some would say that you should always bet on the max number of Pay Lines, that way you are most likely to win with every spin. That’s true, but you are betting more coins on every spin. Others would say that you should bet on just one single Pay Line per spin, since each line is weighed independently in the win-or-lose equation. That’s true too.
So this one is up to you - give it a try, see for yourself what you enjoy more.
Some find it boring to play with just one Pay Line and enjoy the excitement and fast-pace of a multiple Pay Line game. Others prefer to stretch the game as much as possible, the way to do that is to bet on one line at a time.
Phew! We are finally getting to that second question: How come I can Win with only two identical symbols, not three?
Say Hello to Wild Symbols
Wilds are awesome. They really are. Wilds can substitute for any other symbol.
So, if you get two cherries and one Wild - you win! If you get one spade and two Wilds -
you win! Please don’t ask why they are called ‘Wilds’. Would you rather they were called Substitutions?
Not much more to say about Wilds, that’s pretty much sums it up.
Oh, actually one more thing. Wilds come in all shapes and sizes. Each slot has its own Wild design.
The next special symbol you want to be aware of is the Scatter.
Gather Your Scatter Symbols
Scatter symbols are also pretty awesome. They can generate a number of different goodies for you:
Scatter symbols can award you with coin prizes, free spins or bonus rounds.
The thing with Scatter symbols is, they like company.
So in order to generate goodies for you, you’ll need to have 3 or more Scatters.
(There are some Slots that 1 or 2 Scatters only can generate a small prize, but that’s not the norm.)
Important to know: Scatter symbols don’t need to land on a Pay Line.
As long they are visible on the screen, they are working for you.
And that’s where their name comes from, they Scatter all over of the place, care-free and happy to please.
So we said Scatters can generate free spins and bonus rounds, but another
common activation of Scatter can be that of a Multiplier - multiply your win x2 or x3.
And the best part is, Scatters multiply your entire win from the round, not just that of a specific Pay Line.
What else? Wilds cannot substitute for Scatters. So if you need three Scatter symbols
to generate a winning feature, don’t look for the Wilds to stand in for a Scatter, look for the Scatters. And don’t worry, they’ll show up, they always do.
At the Beginning of Each Game
You want to start by deciding the amount of money you wish to play with. You have a few steps here.
First, the Bet Amount. In every slot you will have a Minimum and Maximum bet points. For example, between 0.5 to 100 coins. Meaning, you can bet half a coin on every spin, or 50 coins on each spin. Needless to say, the higher your Bet Amount is, the higher the reward will be.
Let’s talk about the term ‘coin’ for a second. You will see that we use ‘coins’ on our sites, not dollars or euros or pounds. The reason for that is to simplify the user experience.
Instead of dealing all the time with exchange rates, in each country the term ‘coin’ refers to the local currency.
So 4 coins would mean 4 AUS dollars in Australia, 4 pounds in England, and 4 euros in Germany.
Back to Bet Amount. We said the first thing to do before starting to play is deciding on the bet amount.
Second thing you need to do is decide with how many Pay Lines you want to play. Crucial to understand: the Bet Amount is for a single Pay Line. Like we explained in the Pay Line section above, most slot games give you the option to decide with how many Pay Lines you want to play, and you’ll need to multiply that by the Bet Amount. So, if you want to bet on 2 coins and choose to play with five Pay Lines, you will bet 10 coins on every spin. The higher the risks are, the higher the rewards.
That’s pretty much it. Once you made those two decisions, you are ready to play.
The only other decision you’ll need to make is a very simple one: to click yourself every time on the Spin button, or select the AutoPlay.
Let the Spinning Begin
Once you play, things will start happening. Reels will spin, Pay Lines will present themselves as you win, Wilds will animate in front of your eyes and Scatters will award you with different bonuses. Life is good. You do not need to worry about how to recognise the different symbols, like Wilds and Scatters. They will be clearly obvious, even though each slot has an entirely different theme and design. They sparkle, they make happy sounds, they are usually animated, like we said, clearly obvious.
You can change your bet between spins. Decide to raise or lower your Bet, increase or decrease the number of Pay Lines you play with. And if you are new to slots, you should definitely do that. It is the best way to get a feel of the game, see how different combinations of Coins and Lines play out.
That’s basically all you really need to know in order to start playing Online Slots. If you read thus far, you are ready. Below, we will explain some more terms and matters related to the game, but they are extra. You game won’t be affected by knowing or not knowing them. From here on, it’s up to you and to your level or curiosity and itch to know things.
ENJOY THE RUSH!
